Hollow Roof House
Another striking modern design by Randy Bens Architecture Studio. This house fits on a ‘standard’ 33 foot wide Vancouver lot but is a striking edition to the East Van neighbourhood. All metal cladding, including some very unique custom aluminium window screens and perforated sun canopies are definitely features of the exterior. White Oak millwork and matching Herringbone wood floors create a warm but refined element inside the home. Other features include a home gym, steam shower, home theatre room, open plan main floor and a lovely powder room with handmade pink tiles and custom pink grout. This striking home is surrounded by excellent landscaping using Basalt boulders and stepping stones filled in with well selected plants, trees, and mosses.
Tall and Proud
The beautiful exterior includes custom aluminum metal sun canopies and floor to ceiling European curtain wall glazing. A full length rooftop patio is discreetly incorporated into the shape of the house, with amazing views of the north shore.
Indoor Outdoor
A large lift and slide door recessed into the floor and finished to the ceiling provides a great indoor outdoor threshold to the large concrete patio at the same level. With a gorgeous kitchen just inside the patio, why wouldn't you want to open the door and enjoy a nice day either indoors our outdoors?
Handmade tiles from Morocco were installed in this powder room. The intention was for the color of the grout to stay consistent with the color of the tile. An off the shelf grout color just couldn’t be found that matched, so our team put in the effort of making custom samples and ultimately came up with a great match. A single Bocci 22 outlet further refined the space, complete with some amazing wallpaper the clients found that matches perfectly.
The perforated metal detail was brought to the interior to allow for a thin semi transparent stair guard using aluminum sheets fit into the floor and ceiling. The hole pattern was ultimately decided by evaluating samples of different sizes and frequency of holes, combined with how many hours each sheet needed to be on a laser cutting machine. Time is money 🙂 The end result is exquisite and we think well worth the effort.
The ensuite of the primary bedroom was built without any threshold or step. It started with our structural framing designed to accommodate thinner joists. As the layers of the home were built up, the shower floor finished with slope to a linear drain at the far end while still appearing to be level with the adjacent bathroom floor.
The steam shower was completed with a tiled bench and tiled walls and ceiling that extend beyond the shower door for a uniform appearance.
The unique shape of the exterior of the home translates through to the interior with some beautiful angles presented on the top floor. The finishing and alignments to achieve the end result was much more complicated than you would think. Our team and our trades worked together over many phases of the job to make these alignments look intentional yet discreet.
Open Plan
An open floor plan on the main floor works so well in this home. The entire west wall of the main floor is all custom millwork. A mix of painted lacquer and bleached white oak cabinetry pair well with the white oak herringbone floors. Storage has never been more beautiful.
Heavy Metal
The exterior of the house is all metal, with some wood accents at the front and rear entry door areas. The metal canopies are made of aluminum and powder coated for durability and a low maintenance finish. The large floor to ceiling windows on the top floor (front and back) have a perforated metal screen that is neatly integrated into the custom window frame and provides partial shade and privacy at these exposed ends of the house. They also just look fantastic!
